How many times are you told you "have to know" this verse?

And then it's paraphrased and described to you with an unclear definition of what it means. You're left with questions.

Luckily, Bible Gateway Plus helps you get the answers from trusted scholars and pastors.

With over 50 premium resources you will find the answers you need, whenever you need them.

Were you told you just have to know a random verse, like Haggai 1:5-7?

Maybe someone paraphrased it, and said it read something like, "God says you have to be careful what you eat and wear..."

Here's how that verse reads in the New International Version:

⁵ Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. ⁶ You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”

⁷ This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways.

What does this really mean? There are several resources available in Bible Gateway Plus that can answer this question, and the Africa Bible Commentary answers that question by recounting the situations people were in and describing how people were living day to day. With that background summarizes and states:

"We should carefully examine our own lives to make sure that we are doing God’s will. God does not accept our excuses for delaying to do his work and living in spiritual indifference or complacency. We should not give material things or our own interests priority over God and his work. When we do put him first, he will provide for all our physical, spiritual and material needs..."

Not only does the Africa Bible Commentary answer your questions around the verse, this resource provides clarity on how this verse should be interpreted and the direction to live our lives.
