What might a moral society look like? In his Letter to the Galatians, the apostle Paul lists the primary components of what he calls “the fruits of the Spirit” and contrasts them with “the works of the flesh.” The list includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. “Against such things,” he says—with a sly bit of humor, no doubt—“there is no law” (5:22–23). Such attributes are “legal” directly due to the foundational role each plays in building strong and beneficial relationships that contribute to human well-being in general.
